City of Maitland issued the following announcement on Jan. 17.

The City of Maitland soon will begin a long anticipated project to create more than half a mile of new sidewalks, improving pedestrian safety in the Dommerich Estates neighborhood.

Work will include 3,000 linear feet of concrete sidewalks to be built along one side of Dommerich Drive and Choctaw Trail. Two small roadway islands – located where Dommerich intersects with Algonquin Trail and Apache Trail - will be partially rebuilt to accommodate the sidewalk, improve safety and add more landscaping.

Groundbreaking for the project will be Saturday, Jan. 25. Construction will begin the following week. Completion is expected in six to nine months depending on weather.

The new sidewalks will provide safe access for pedestrians who now must walk in the roadways with passing vehicles. This area is a few blocks west of Dommerich Elementary School and Maitland Middle School.

The project will rebuild portions of residential driveways impacted by the new sidewalks. At some properties, retaining walls will be built to accommodate the walkway. Curbs will be rebuilt on the side of streets with the new sidewalks. The city also will relocate two stormwater inlets that are occasionally struck by vehicles along the route.
